Social Impact Ecosystems (SIEs)

A Social Impact Ecosystem (SIE) is a collaborative, interconnected network of diverse actors—individuals, organizations, institutions, and communities—working together to create sustainable, systemic social or environmental change.

Grounded in shared values and interdependence, it moves beyond isolated efforts to a living, networked approach that aligns resources, knowledge, and action to generate collective impact, long-term sustainability, and adaptive solutions to complex challenges.

Key Idea

Old: Improve programs

New: Design systems that empower others

Old Question:

“How do we improve our programs?”

New Question:

“Are we designing our institution so that others become more powerful because we lead?”

Key Components

  • Diverse Actors: The ecosystem includes entrepreneurs, investors, philanthropists, policymakers, researchers, and community leaders.
  • Systems View: Emphasizes collective change over individual action by aligning mindsets, policies, and power.

Key Components

  • Interdependence: Members pool knowledge and resources to address issues like poverty and inequality more effectively.
  • Infrastructure & Technology: Uses technology to connect stakeholders and boost impact.
  • Values-Driven: Guided by shared values such as sustainability, equity, and social justice.

Changemaking Ecosystems

Changemaking Ecosystems are a type of Social Impact Ecosystem.

A Changemaker Ecosystem engages an entire community in developing changemaking capacity to address local and global problems collaboratively.

For social impact success, everyone within the social impact ecosystem (SIE) should self-identify as a changemaker.
